Petronas Global R&D Centre / Turin

The winning design in an international design competition for Petronas Global R&D Centre in Turin, led by David and his team at his former practice BM.

The new R&D headquarters spans a multi-purpose research facility that will function as the European base for teams of scientists, researchers, and product developers.

The building is arranged in a contemporary, linear form, accommodating a range of functions including labs, workshops, engine test cells, conferencing, offices, staff restaurant, and welfare facilities. The design of the fifth elevation and dramatic saw-tooth roof profile was inspired by the surrounding field-patterns and jagged profile of the Alpine peaks.

The proposed solution provides the addition of a new floor to the central 30’s building. Limiting the addition to one storey ensured it remained no higher than the neighbouring buildings and minimised the visual impact from the street. Stepping back the form also created the opportunity for an outdoor rooftop terrace, ideal for the implementation of the rooftop bar. The glazed form also benefits from 360-degree views of the surrounding city, parkland and river Thames.
