Our client wanted to explore the purposeful rebirth of redundant basement floorspace where we propose a cellar restaurant which could be used flexibly for breakfast, conferencing, Jazz evenings and other hosted functions. Rationalising the space utilisation within the basement of the hotel, we presented several feasibility layouts which looked at repurposing and replanning surplus space that is currently underutilised.
The proposed restaurant layout creates a space which acts not only as guest dining but as a destination restaurant. Utilising the features of the distinctive types of spaces within the basement; the large high ceiling areas with existing pillars and exposed bricks provide an open and social feel. This arrangement is combined with the smaller individual rooms, with vaulted ceilings designated for a more intimate and private dining experience.
To ensure that the proposed elevations sensitively blend within their wider setting, the frontage draws on elements grounded within the local vernacular. This included clear references to the forms and rhythms found throughout the existing high street, such as double gables and Georgian mansion style elements.
To the rear of the site, where the nature of the site is less sensitive, the forms have remained traditional, but with the addition of more contemporary materials and detailing. The lift core to the rear forms a new modern clocktower which solidifies the development as a landmark within the town.
