Old Belmont Brewery, Swindon

Residential Architecture
MIxed-Use, Housing + Urban Living

Our proposal is for a high quality residential mixed use development containing 16 no new industrial loft style apartments together with a small Class E studio with the former Brewery rejuvenated as a leisure, food and beverage destination. The heritage buildings would be refurbished and the roof top terrace over the single storey south extension would be completely redesigned as al fresco dining creating a unique new destination within this popular part of town.

In terms of footprint and volume we proposed a 3.5 storey perimeter block wrap to the northern edge of the plot, framing heritage buildings in views from the west and the south. The architectural envelope will be designed to express the former linear burgage plots resulting in strong forms incorporating a central courtyard garden through which a linear access route will be created for residents leading directly to their front doors. The courtyard garden would act as a tranquil urban oasis with a communal pocket garden designed with well being for the residents in mind.

The carefully considered new structures were designed to draw on Swindon’s rich industrial heritage and reinforce local distinctiveness. The combination of a new food and beverage offer within the former nightclub together with purpose built loft style flats would activate this important part of the Old Town and act as a catalyst for further infill of smaller and medium sized vacant plots and structures which are  characteristic of the area.

A new gate in the north west frontage leads residents through to a private garden from where access to their new homes are arranged. This green amenity space sits in the location of the former brewery hop garden and acts as a discrete reference to the sites history. The green heart is expressed within the architectural design of the south elevation of the new structures which can support greenery such as climbing plants and balcony planters.
